I have
completed and provided EDI training, and I reflect on the topic on an ongoing basis. That
said, I am not an EDI expert – if that is your core need, I can recommend people and
organisations that are more skilled than I.
I of course welcome your thoughts on it, and, most importantly, how I can though our work
together honor both your individual needs, and the needs of your collective group – without
holding you responsible to talk for the whole community, I will be interested in both your
individual perspective, as well as how your perspective may offer a microcosm of the interest
of the whole community, and how you may be called to represent that community (even if it
may differ from your personal needs or view). I’ve learned that the anxiety to individually get
thing right is particularly a white-cis-male conditioning, so while I will certainly pour my heart
to bring more justice and do right, I will also allow myself to learn, fail, and in this will
hopefully be a useful ally without having to make you carry the weight of my self-esteem in
the process! 🙂

Beyond these sentiments, however, I am still struggling to decolonise my actions — more on this toward the end.
My equity praxis, more broadly, has been shaped by multisectoral collaborations in the Global South and the Canadian North, across six countries and four languages. Living in a
multi-generational, multicultural household, I build trust and intimacy daily by listening deeply
and recognizing how even mundane interactions can replicate patterns of systemic and domestic violence.

Building intimacy with survivors requires me to be attuned to these patterns and to actively neutralize them—much like noise-reducing headphones create a calmer soundscape. This
means not only undoing my own white colonial patriarchal habits but also recognizing those of others, whether intentional or not, and buffering in ways that serve my intimates.
Because complex systems emerge holographically from simple interactions, I believe achieving our social goals requires tackling destructive mindsets at all levels: intimate relationships, family bonds, community groups, workplaces, and governing bodies. While it is not practical in all projects to address the root causes of injustice and sunsustainability, we must push the envelope each time, peeling back a layer one level deeper than what might feel comfortable for a given set of funders and partners. We can name the harm and bring a variety of perspectives into the room. By doing so, those with insights into injustice help steer toward a more just outcome, even if the terrain is unfamiliar to those with the most agency.
Bringing arts and spirit into these conversations is one way to lower professional masks sufficiently, making power imbalances less dangerous and blind spots less ego-threatening.
I am deeply grateful for the opportunities I have had to work with youth and facilitators trained in empowerment through the arts; they inspire me to explore how playfulness and nature-connection can be brought into professional settings to foster deeper relationships and challenge power dynamics in the room.

As I shared in my opening, The Kanien’kehà:ka are the traditional custodians of the lands and waters which host my home. After having been evicted of a rental home three times during my twenty years in Vancouver, owning for the first time a home has brought a new sense of security for my family. But, it also brings a new ethical knot: I now get to benefit from our occupation of Turtle Island not only through the opportunities it grants me (which are not equally accessible to the communities whos land this is), but now also in my capacity to claim ownership over part of its land, deriving emotional and and financial benefits from it. I struggle to see what a fair compensation would be for this — beyond aiming in words, thoughts, and spirit to decolonise this culture, my actions, I admit, have yet to be commensurate to the
privilege I hold in the land we occupy.

training completed

<span style="font-size: 20.254px;
